Expectations for the course - Teaching Teens and Adults

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog!!! I´m really happy to start using computers again and to interact with friends even though I find it difficult sometimes... As regards my expectations for the course, I would like to learn more and more about teaching teens because I find it very challenging. I think that I am more prepared to teach children and adults because I feel more confident with them, but not with adolescents! This year, I´m teaching them for the second time in my life. So it is the perfect time to start using new strategies so as to help them learn the language and to make lessons more enjoyable for them!

Well, keep in touch...

See you!

Deby

  1. Welcome to our course, Deby!I find your attitude certainly positive, so open to learning and trying new things. That's a true teacher speaking!
Can I ask you what you find particularly challenging about teenagers? Now we've already looked into some authors' ideas about them, have you found any "answers" through them?
    Cheers,
    Gladys

  2. Debbie, I agree with you when you say that teaching teens is challenging; I'd rather teach adults myself. You are already a very good teacher, so relax! And let's try to make the most of it.

  3. Hello Gladys!

Thank you for your words! I definitely believe in positive thinking! ;-)
What I find challenging about teens is the fact that I need to think a lot as to how to make my lessons more interesting for them or how to keep them “awake” during the whole class. Every time we play games or do other extra activities, they are really motivated and focused on the tasks. However, when we start working with the textbook they usually change their attitude. They seem to lose their interest or feel sleepy. I know that working with the book is sometimes boring and that at this age they feel tired and need to sleep a lot, but I still think that I’m missing something.
Despite all this, I know they are very good learners and that they have a great potential to learn. I enjoy teaching them, they remind me of my brothers and sisters because they are adolescents too!
So I’ll keep working on their motivation.

    See you then…

    Debbie.-

  4. Thanks for your beautiful words, Normi! It seems that we all find it very challenging. We’ll see what happens next.
And one more thing, I’m happy that we’re together this year and that we’ll finish together!

    Well, keep in touch...

    Kisses

  5. As Gladys has said, your words do show a very positive attitude towards learning. I hope I also can get some of that from you!;-)
I feel really identified when you say that you're more confident teaching children and adults than teenagers. I also seem to find it harder to think about activities to motivate them and keep that motivation up. I'm sure you have loads of interesting ideas to share with the rest of us to improve our teaching! Looking forward to read them,
    Rod
